I know this reply is late, but it might be helpful for anyone else who comes across this thread.

I went to the Windows store to use their display Elite x3. I scheduled a "support" appointment, but honestly they are not enthusiasts and do not know how to do stuff like this.

FYI: you're going to be in the Windows store a while.

1. You need to update their Elite x3. Make sure it's got the right software from HP. I think there's a separate app for the lap dock or so. I don't recall since I did this last year.

2. There are two parts to the update. The first is the wired part. You will likely encounter connection issues requiring rebooting both the phone and the lap dock. Just keep trying until it updates over the wire.

3. Then, you need to connect via wireless display and update again. The previous update is only for the firmware, and the second update is for wireless and has to be done while wireless. You'll probably have to reboot both devices several times to get them to connect correctly.

Good luck, and don't feel to frustrated that nothing connects right. It works perfectly after updating both components. I've been using mine with another laptop, or as an extension to my desktop, and I haven't had a random disconnect or issue in the past year. It's a very basic device, so as long as the firmware covers all the bases then it should work totally fine.

I think that now that people are exclusively buying this for Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Note 9, they deserve support from HP, especially when you consider the price of this thing.

Other companies are developing products like this such as Miraxess, but I purchased HP's assuming that HP would care more about their customers and enable the best experience with all of their products.

But clearly it seems HP does not seem to show any interest in the customer.

In the documentation, the only method listed for updating the Lap Dock firmware is to use an app that is exclusive to the HP Elite x3. I purchased a Lap Dock for use with a Lumia 950 that I already owned. Is there any other way that I can download and install the latest firmware without the HP phone?

I have a Lumia 950 XL and decided to buy a HP Elite x3 lap dock. Overall I like the lap dock,
