Some of the general sources for recovery for deleted files:
- Check the Trash / Recycle bins for the configured disks on your computer.
- If the files were located in your (Cloud Stoage) - For example, OneDrive : Sign into OneDrive and check the Recycle Bin
- Remote Storage Systems, for an Example, a NAS, typically support their own Recycle bins.
- Check your backups
Caveats
In the case of the Recycle Bin located in configured Disks on your computer,
- Files and Folders that can be moved to the Recycle / Trash bin are typically those folders that are not stored in Cloud Storage.
- The Recycle Bin Properties must not be set to immediately delete files.
- There must be available space to move the data to the Recycle bin - if there is not, you will see a warning that the only alternative is to permanently delete the data.
- Permanently deleted data is gone, at least for the purposes of this discussion. Retrieving deleted data - forensic recovery - is difficult, expensive, and not covered here.
In the case of OneDrive,
- Fles that are transferred to the Recycle bin are stored there for a limited time and then removed permanently by OneDrive.
- Sign into your OneDrive account and check the Recycle Bin for recently removed files.
In the case of your backups,
This is where it can get tricky.
Assuming you are making backups of your data to protect it,
The methods for recovery vary widely by the software used to create the backup.
