We have a large number of T640 Thin Clients running Windows 10 IoT.
They run the latest image supplied by HP Thin Update.
They are required to have the "HP Write Filter" enabled and also need to update Windows Defender automatically.
The default exlcusions provided by HP Write Manager for Defender are as follows:
FILES:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender
C:\Proram Files\Windows Defender
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Temp\MpCmdRun.log
REG:
\REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender
Will these enabled, Windows defender does not update, in fact the "Threat Protection Service" stops and AV fails completely.
I have narrowed it down to the exclusion of a subfolder of "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform"
If the subfolder "Platform" is exlcuded then defender stops working. as below...
Could you please let me know what folders/registry keys are required to allow Defender to work with HP Write Filter?
I am thinking that these built in exclusions are out of date or copied from a legacy windows version?
As, C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and also C:\Windows\Temp\MpCmdRun.log are no longer used in Windows 10?
This guide below from Microsoft (for their UWF solution not a FBWF) lists some additional registry exclusions. These also do not help with HP Write Protect. Antimalware support on UWF-protected devices | Microsoft Docs
The exclusions in HP Write Manager are listed in the Microsoft guide for UWF, but UWF is not a suitable solution for us as these devices are very rarely rebooted. Due to the way that UWF always writes exclusions to the overlay until rebooted, they soon run out of RAM and lock up. It appears that HP Write Filter does write the exclusions straight to disk, but we just need to resolve this issue with Defender.
Does anyone please have Windows Defender working succesfully with HP Write Protect?
