22es Monitor
macOS 10.15 Catalina

When I connected my HP monitor to my laptop through the HDMI cable, the screen would briefly display then go black. The buttons on the monitor were also malfunctioning. Whichever button I would press, it would turn on and off the monitor screen. Something like this was happening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2nbeVsCpMA

After a lot of searching on the internet I figured that it is the malfunctioning buttons which are causing the screen to disconnect/ flicker constantly.

Solution:

A solution to this problem is to disconnect the button ribbon from the monitor's main board. This will disable access to the monitor's menu but will allow the screen to work at least.

Step 1: Take the screen off its metal stand.

Step 2: Unscrew the two screws behind the screen.

Step 3: Use a sharp tool (e.g. flat-head screwdriver) to pry apart the plastic case at the back. Start from top corner points as shown in the photo. This will require some force.

Step 4: Insert the screwdriver in the bottom edge and pry apart the cover from there too.

Step 5: After opening the case, locate the ribbon connecting the buttons to the board.

Step 6: Use a screwdriver to gently lift the grey latch which disconnects the ribbon.

Step 7: Pull out the ribbon. Then close the latch and reassemble the monitor.
