Compaq 615
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have an old Compaq 615. I wanted to try running Linux on it, so I was making changes to BIOS settings in order to get the laptop boot from a memory stick. But I never got that far. After some changes, when re-booting the laptop, it still gets its power on, fan is on and there are power and Wifi lights on. But nothing else. Nothing on the screen, it is totally black, and so is an external display if connected. If starting with Win+b combination, the light next to caps lock blinks, but otherwise the same.

I tried to make a BIOS recovery memory stick on another PC, but when running the software (for example SP55877.exe), I end up in getting the error message THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN THE NECESSARY WMI SUPPORT. The same happens when running it on an old Win XP PC and quite new Win 10 laptop.

I found some advice to update HP files, but I'm trying to write the recovery stick on a different PC, which is not HP/Compaq, so I'm not so keen to install any HP software on it.

Any ideas what I should do to get the SPxxxxx to run or otherwise get a disk image that I can use in recovering my Compaq?
