Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I have an HP laptop with the following description (I'll try to get the model number later tonight when I have access to it again):

HP Everyday Laptop 14" AMD A9-9420 APU with Radeon R5 Graphics, 16GB DDR4 RAM 240GB SSD DVDRW Win10Home 64bit

This laptop has a VGA port and an HDMI port.  I would like to connect a projector to the VGA port and an external monitor to the HDMI port and have them both show the same extended display, and the laptop screen showing the main display.

I have tried this but can only get 2 displays going - either the laptop display and one of the external displays, or both external displays and not the laptop.  Should it be possible for this Laptop to show all 3 displays at the same time?  I know I can probably buy an HDMI splitter or something to make it work, but thought if the ports were there why not use them?
