Hi everybody,
I hope someone here would be able to help me to find a solution to have the memory of my HP dv6 updated from 4GB to 8GB. I've faced a lot problems and solved the most of them, but not able to solve all completely as per descriptions below:
Problem: Not able to get my laptop working with 8GB memory modules after to have it updated from 4GB.
Product details:
* Check here to see the computer characteristics/details at HP website
All the drivers are updated as per the drivers available for the original OS (Windows &) installed on the product when it was bought (later it was updated to Windows 10 as offered by MS).
Current memory modules installed (datasheet😞 Type DDR3 / Size 2048 MBytes / Manufacturer Elpida / Max Bandwidth PC3-10700 (JEDEC #4 667 MHz) / Part Number EBJ21UE8BDS0-DJ-F / Serial Number 3909098206
Memory (DIMM) extract from HP website:
598856-001: 2GB, PC3-10600, shared DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module (SODIMM)
Click to order the functional equivalent:
652972-001: 2GB, 1600Mhz, PC3L-12800 DDR3L DIMM memory module (SHARED)
I've checked the technical characteristics of the memory at the HP website (as above, noted that both are descontinued), but based on the information I've got from HP website, I've got confused due to the differences I decided to check other sources like Crucial website, local suppliers, etc. Once the information from other sources were confirming the DD3L (1.35 V, 12800 etc. etc.) would work perfectly on my computer to replace the DD3 (1.50V, 10800). So based on that I've bought two Kingston memory modules (KVR16LS11/4) of 4GB each.
1) What happened when the 4GB modules were installed without to change the startup configuration?
A blue screen was the result, so the computer restart so many times with different blue screens message and finally tried to enter in the recovery mode without any success.
2) After returning the 2GB the computer ran perfectly. So, I tried to change the setup through the msconfig and set the maximum memory to 4GB and returned the 4GB memory modules and the computer was loaded normally, but the physical memory was shown as less than 4GB (5 ... GB hardware reserved) alhtought the memory installed was 8GB.
So I've tried to set the maximum memory to the minimum required but it didn't work, blue screnn was the result again: kernel security check failure.
When I've tried to set the maximum memory to 8GB and restarted the computer the result was the a lot vertical lines on the screen and even trying to enter the recovery/repair mode I had no success, didn't load those options.
Beyond other things, I've removed the CMOS battery, returnet it and later on turned the computer without the memory modules, so inserted one memory module each time, etc. but nothig worked out. I've reset the hardware reserved amount of memory too.
I ran all the memory checks that I would and all of them resulted as no error found nor problems detected.
So I believe the problem is related to memory size somehow, I mean some configuration of the BIOS or so on.
I hope someone here would help, please.
