Zbook Power G7
Ubuntu LTS

HI there,

I have a question I'm stumped on with my new Zbook Power G7. It has the i7-1075H processor. I have dual boot with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

I understand the TDP of the 1075 processor is 45W. When booting into Windows, I can easily change the RAPL CPU limit using Intel XTU to 45 Watts and work happily.

When booting into Linux, the default RAPL is 25W. That is fine, and I can manually change it to 45 Watts using the powercap RAPL registers. The computer will run happily at 45 Watts for a period (temperatures are fine, around 70 degrees C at full 45W load).

After a period of time (perhaps 30 minutes or a few hours), the RAPL resets back to 25 Watts. I've investigated a little and I don't think there is anything on the Linux side that is resetting this value. I'm at a complete loss as to why this keeps resetting.

My question is: is the BIOS periodically resetting the CPU RAPL back to the default value of 25W in Linux? Is there any way to increase this and run long-term at the rated 45W cpu power?

I bought this laptop to finish my engineering PhD which involves a lot of Linux simulations, and was hoping to use the full capacity of the CPU! Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Andy
