HP 15-BW032WM overheating.

HP support couldn't do anything because the laptop was outside the warranty period (barely - ended 10/31/18)  Thanks HP.

So I decided to open the laptop to see why it was getting hot.  I could hear the fan running (very fast) and plenty of air was moving at the exhaust vent so I knew it wasn't plugged...it simply kept shutting off and after 10 minutes of cooling I was able to turn it back on - Message at restart said overheating.

Laptop was very clean inside..no dirt or debris in the fan or heatsink...so I decided to remove the heatsink to see if there was enough thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink.....when doing so I discovered:

The heat pipe came loose from the metal plate so essentially this thing was running without a heatsink.  The fan couldn't keep it cool even though it was running max speed.

HP wanted $25 bucks plus shipping for a new heatsink (really HP?).  I found a used one on ebay for $9.99 and free shipping.  Installed the heatsink and my problem is solved.

I'm posting this not to brag, but to hopefully help someone who may have the same problem.
