HP Thunderbolt Dock G2

Hello all,

I just want to report a fix for the Thunderbolt Dock G2.

I plugged in two monitors and I noticed that the dock fan (which I didn't even knew it had) started making noise. It sounded like something was dragging on it's spokes.

I saw the picture of a disassembled dock here in the forum and I adventured in. I found nothing wrong with the fan itself, but then I looked at the inside of the top of the case (that remains attached to the rest of the dock) and the silver mesh in it was curling away from the plastic. Looks like the glue gave up and that little flap was hitting the fan.

I re-attached it with some extra tape and now I hear the fan running, but no slapping noise on it.

To disassemble the dock, start by removing every screw you see. at some point you get to removing the cable from the bottom. The plastic case left pops off. Find somewhere to grip from and pop it out.

Then you'll see 3 screws on the circuit board, but there are some other screws DEEP into the dock. The circuit board has circular cutouts that let you see the screws.

Remove those, and then the contents slide out. You'll have to help the ports get around the outer shell a bit. Be careful because the top remains attached by some cables.

Once that's out, look at the inside of the shell of what would be above the fan, and you may see a silver tape curled up. Reattach that with some tape and you should be good to go.
