Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I'm trying to connect a ZBook G5 to a Dell U3818DW display.

My previous setup with a simple HDMI cable worked fine. Since the display also has KVM functionality, and I have two computers connected to it, I did also connect it via USB to be able to use a shared mouse/keyboard for both computers. This worked fine as well.

Now I wanted to replace the HDMI and USB cable, and also the charging cable, with just one Thunderbolt 3 cable, my understanding is that it can carry data+video+power.

The Dell has a USB-C port which supports DP1.2, 100W. So I ordered a Cable Matters cable with 40GB/s (should be sufficient to drive 3840x1600) and 100W. When plugging this in, the laptop charges, but does not detect an external display. The keyboard/mouse don't work either. Changing Thunderbolt-related settings in the BIOS did not help (although I did not try all of the possible combinations yet). Thunderbolt diagnostics are fine.

Googling around I only found people connecting the laptop via USB-C Thunderbolt either to a dock or to HDMI on the monitor side.

So my question, is what I'm trying to do possible at all? What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks for your help!
