have the same problem with the HP i purchased with argos that came with free office. eventually got through the activation process till the very end when it asked for bank details for auto renewal . it would not let you untick the auto renewal option so i gave up. I am angry and now want an alternative to microsoft as well.  I had to go through a  hazzel signing up for amicrosoft account first which you had to have to activate office. I guess when your as big as microsoft you can afford to be Class A BUms and HP and Argos should not sell computers with the office bundle attached under these circumstances. In my opinion its freudulent practice.
