As I am probably not the only one, I wanted to add something to the search, so other people don't look for a solution until the cows come home.
First, I had a driver issue, as the drivers were outdated and probably packaged wrong from the company image. I fixed this part with a resolution I think from Raj on this board, uninstalling all additional pointing device drivers, and reinstalling the standard one from scratch. I also replaced like 20 other drivers from the HP download section for the model. This reduced the problems from complete hangs that forced me to unplug and replug the USB connector every 30 minutes or something to occasionally sticking mouse cursor.
That problem angered me forever, the mouse would operate, but every odd 20 seconds the cursor while moving would stick for 0.5 seconds and then continue following the moves. This gets you totally crazy if you work a lot pointing with the mouse. I tried everything in the book that I found anywhere on the internet, including BIOS options. No fix.
Finally, it was the obvious reason that probably many people do not look into when the first reason was a driver issue - the mouse itself also had a defect. For some strange reason, it did not occur that often on my old laptop, but when I replaced the mouse with the same model from another PC it worked flawlessly. Try this first if your driver correction doesn't yield 100% success. 🙂
