Spectre X2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi Everyone,

I hope someone is able to help. I am looking for some advice to do with a Spectre X2 that i have been having issues with. I am currently on my third replacement after the first two i had kept overheating, the fan would go crazy and the the microphone wouldnt pick up my voice because it gets blocked by the noise on the fan. This has happened on all three units.

When i say overheating, I turn the laptop on and it starts off at 50c then within a minute climbs to around 70c. With an average of around 5% utilisation, the computer averages between 70-80c. That to me is abnormal. It also means the fan goes crazy but that does not seem to make it any cooler.

I contacted HP support and spoke with the agent. I was refgerred to the premium department where i explained the situation and my experience with the previous cases. We went through the troubleshooting phases (all of which i have been through before and had done previous to the call with this specific unit). After updating the BIOS, it became worse and at a point the CPU reached 92c when idle.

The agent went away for about 4 minutes, came back and send she was going to send me a link to explain why my unit will run hot due to the way its designed and what not; she said it was normal to see temperatures such as this in this unit. Not addressing the microphone issue at all.

I am saddened by the support HP has provided in this instance. It was kind of as if they could not be bothered to help me. I know for a fact it is not normal to idle at that temperature and it is certainly not ideal. It is hot to touch, loud and how long will the CPU last if it running at temperatures like that all the time. It's meant to be a premium laptop and its not cheap so I'd want (a working one) to last a good few years. With sustained temperatures like that, I'll probably see a decline in usability and performance really quickly. Again, not ideal.

I was thinking of calling back and getting to speak to another agent and perhaps escalating the issue (which i have done previously) but I am not sure whether that will get me anywhere.

Does anyone have any advice or experience with a similar problem?
