Pavilion DM1-2150so
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi!

I was just going to ask you a question, but I solved the problem and figured I might as well document it here in case someone else has the same problem and comes searching for a solution.

I bought my DM1-2150so with 2GB of RAM (The RAM chip is labeled "2GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600S). It has worked fine so far. I tried to replace the 2GB chip with a 4GB chip (labeled 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S) which should be okay according to the manual. The BIOS recognized that I had 5120 MB (1024MB of fixed RAM and 4096MB of user-upgradable RAM) and dxdiag and Computer properties in Windows 7 also confirmed that I had 5120 MB. But for some reason Windows started out by just seeing 762 MB of usable RAM. This was strange, right?

I tried updating my BIOS to the latest version and updating my Windows drivers. Reboot. No change. I put my 2GB chip back in the notebook, everything worked as expected and 3GB (2+1) was recognized and usable. Tried re-inserting the 4GB chip. Same problem as before.

Then I tried installing Ubuntu 18.04 with the 2GB chip installed. Afterwards I put in the 4GB chip. Ubuntu recognized the full 5GB! And after reboot and choosing Windows, also Windows recognized 5GB!

I cannot explain why this solved my problem. Maybe I was lucky the last time I inserted the 4GB chip and got it into the exact right position so that it worked. Or the Linux installation had some overall effect on the hardware. Anyway, I hope that this can help someone who has the same problem. Or maybe someone can come up with a better explanation to why my struggling finally solved the problem.

Best regards

Henrik
