Hi @kimyh

To print on your HP LaserJet 2606dw using a Linux operating system, you'll need the correct PPD file (PostScript Printer Description) to ensure proper functionality with CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System). Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the issue:

1. Verify the Installation of CUPS

  • First, ensure that CUPS is properly installed on your Linux system. You can verify it by running the following command: sudo systemctl status cups
  • If it's not running, start it with: sudo systemctl start cups

2. Install HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing)

  • The HPLIP software package is an HP-developed solution for integrating HP printers into Linux systems. It often includes the necessary PPD files and drivers for your printer model.

To install HPLIP, use the following command (for Debian-based distributions like

sudo apt-get install hplip

For Red Hat or Fedora, use:

sudo dnf install hplip

After installation, run the following command to set up your HP printer:

hp-setup

3. Download the PPD File for HP LaserJet 2606dw

If you prefer to manually download the PPD file, you can find it on HP’s official website or through HPLIP support. The PPD file for most HP LaserJet printers should be available in the HPLIP package itself, but if it's not, you can download it directly from the HPLIP Download Page or through the HP Open Source website:

  • HPLIP Download Page

Direct PPD File for HP LaserJet 2606dw:

  • You can also try manually downloading the PPD file for the LaserJet 2606dw from the official HP website:
    • Go to HP Driver Downloads and search for the LaserJet 2606dw.
    • If available, you will be able to download the PPD file for your specific printer model.

4. Manually Adding the Printer with CUPS

If the printer is not automatically detected by CUPS, follow these steps:

  • Open a web browser and go to http://localhost:631. This is the CUPS administration page.
  • From here, click on "Administration" and select "Add Printer".
  • If your printer is connected and recognized via USB or network, select it from the list.
  • When prompted to select a PPD file, you can either select the default HP PPD file or manually upload the downloaded PPD file.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi @kimyh,

Thank you for your response. To print Chinese, Korean, or other non-Latin characters using your HP printer, you need to ensure that your printer and the application you're printing from are properly set up to handle these languages. Here's a guide to help you print Chinese and Korean characters:

1. Ensure Language Support in Your Operating System

Your computer needs to have the necessary language support installed to display and print Chinese or Korean characters.

On Windows:

Add Language Support:

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to Time & Language > Language.
  • Under Preferred languages, click Add a language.
  • Search for Chinese or Korean, and select it to add.
  • After installation, restart your computer if needed.

Enable Input Method:

  • For Chinese, you can choose between Simplified or Traditional Chinese.
  • For Korean, you can use the Korean Input Method.
  • Ensure you have the correct keyboard layout for typing in these languages.

2. Ensure Printer Supports Unicode or Appropriate Fonts

Your HP printer generally uses the PPD (PostScript Printer Description) file for managing how documents are printed. Most modern printers support Unicode characters, but there are a few things you may need to check:

PPD File Considerations:

  • Ensure that your printer's PPD file (if using PostScript) supports Unicode. This ensures that the printer can handle non-Latin characters like Chinese, Korean, etc.
  • If you are using a specific application (such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or a PDF viewer), ensure that the font you are using supports the Chinese or Korean characters.
    • For Chinese, use fonts like SimSun (Simplified) or MingLiU (Traditional).
    • For Korean, you can use fonts like Malgun Gothic or Batang.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
