HP Elitebook 840 G6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am the owner of an Elitebook 840 G6 that I unknowing bought with a BIOS admin password over a year ago. I am trying a method of resetting this password and would like some help identifying the possible risks it may involve. I have become aware of the HP Bios Configuration Utility and am thinking of generating a brute force attack using the command line, here are my steps:

1. Run a common password list through the HPQPswd.exe using a CMD script to generate a folder of their corresponding encrypted files for use by the BIOS.

2. Using another script, run each one through the "BiosConfigUtility64.exe /nspwdfile:"" /cspwdfile:file.bat" command to try if any will reset the BIOS password.

Here is my question. I have run tests on a small number of password, only to hear a faint humming noise coming from my laptop. I fear that this may be my BIOS chip or small hardware component being damaged, is there any chance of this being dangerous?

The reason for this is that I am trying to upgrade to Windows 11, however, my BIOS is out-of-date and the TPM Security is behind the requirements and the only way to fix that is to access the BIOS, which I currently cannot do.

Should this be dangerous or not allowed, I would be thankful for any advice or warnings as this isn't essential to my daily running of the machine and just a "would be nice" scenario.

Kindest Regards,

mjc20
