HP EliteBook Folio 9470m

I am an UBUNTU-newbie, without any windows but realized I wanted to flash my BIOS. When HP believes you are on linux, they show you an older BIOS-update, but if you manually choose Windows as your OS, you are allowed to download the latest BIOS, a package called sp81423.exe.

Having downloaded that package, I have been browsing and reading extensively about flashing BIOS in a linux environment, and most pages provided similar guides on using a bootable USB, with FREEDOS and the BIOS package. I have some experience with dos, from many years back, so I was getting ready to go with the general opinion.

HOWEVER: in the last minute, I found this thread on how to flash directly from USB, without ANY concern about the OS. It simply follows the instructions provided in the BIOS at startup, on the folder and file structure necessary. I did need to install WINE, in order to be able to extract all the different files in the sp81423.exe provided by HP.

Besides adhering exactly to the folder structure, the final key (as he states in his reply a bit down on the page) is RENAMING the BIN and SIG files after the chip number to be flashed. In the case of EliteBook Folio 9470m the two files need to be renamed 68IBD.bin and 68IBD.sig (the same as the BIOS-chip).

That guy saved my day, and I would like to share that this solution worked equally well on my EliteBook Folio 9470m, for anyone else looking to flash their BIOS on an older HP.
