HP Support Assistant notified me that I had an update for Synaptics WBF Fingerprint Driver for the fingerprint reader: Update SP92634. As usual, I used Support Assistant to download & install this update.

Everything seemed normal until the actual installation, but then unusual things happened:

1. First the installation failed; 2. re-running the installation, I got a message that a separate installer had been activated, & that it may disappear, but to let it finish; 3. the installation apparently finished, but no sign of success or failure was shown, the installer just vanished; then a message box appeared, asking whether the installation was successful, unsuccessful, or that I did not know.

I didn't know, so I chose that answer. HP Support Assistant then showed me that the installation status was unknown, but it still had an update showing- which was the driver I had been trying to install, so it didn't appear that the update had been successful.

Device Manager lists my installed driver for Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=003f) as v.4.5.356.0 dated 8/27/2019, so that doesn't look like it's been updated, though I don't know for sure. I tried manually updating the driver using the SP92634 files on my C: drive, but ran into a problem: I don't have permission to access the files.

I tried rebooting & then installing the update, with no success. I then tried downloading & manually installing the update, with an equal lack of success. The installation files are on my C: drive, but I can't run the exe file because I don't have permission, and though I tried, I can't get permission, even as an Admin, even after trying to take ownership.

I've never had this type of problem before, usually updates install easily using Support Assistant, but this time nothing I try seems to work. Something is wrong: with either the update file itself, or maybe the update isn't the correct one for my laptop, or ???

Has anyone got any ideas? My fingerprint reader still works just fine, but it's annoying to be constantly reminded of an update that I can't get to install!
