Pavilion 15-af006ax
Linux

Hello everyone,

I own an HP Pavilion 15-af006ax from 2016, that I have steadily upgraded to 16 GB RAM and a SATA SSD drive. However, the "stock" eDP FWXGA display panel with a 1366x768 resolution, is last sore thumb sticking out, that I'm considering to possibly upgrade.

Unfortunately, as I don't have the financial resources to buy a brand new laptop, hence I'm evaluating possibilities to upgrade the existing one in a meaningful way, with a better FHD IPS display panel "in-built", so that I don't have connect it to a separate external display, or carry a portable FHD display everytime.

This article in this community seems to indicate that laptop screen upgrades are possible, and even offers a suitable part. However, another article warns against any "DIY" attempts to upgrade. So I wanted to know if such an upgrade is possible:

  • physically (would the FHD panel be of same physical dimensions, so that fits inside a FWXGA housing),
  • technically (would the graphics card, BUS, power & electronic interface developed for eDP FWXGA display, support and IPS FHD display), and
  • financially (would an external FHD monitor cost lesser than cost price + shipping + customs & taxes of HP or "after-market" IPS FHD display panel)?

I intend to get a local technician get the replacement done for me (HP Service Center would again cost me a bomb), however I would prefer to do it myself if possible.

Looking forward to receiving helpful suggestions and inputs.

Regards,

Rohit Banerjee
