HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ae0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

In the last couple of days my laptop has started emitting a very loud tone, about 800Hz and overtones whenever any sound is played through the speakers. The tone fades in and out a bit and typically lasts for around 10 seconds then stops. If I plug in earphones there is no such tone in them and the sound from the speakers stops. The tone is in addition to the actual sound which should be playing, the actual sound plays and the tone overlays it. The tone is not affected by any of the volume controls, it's always very loud.

I'm unaware of any new software installations or updates recently and as I mention below, I tried rolling back to an earlier image. I've been using this system for over year without problems.

Realtek High Definition Audio (SST)

Windows 10 pro 64

What I've tried:

  • Run audio troubleshooter - nothing found except "Generic Driver" - no change
  • Tried uninstalling and rebooting to get a new driver - no change
  • Tried installing Realtek driver from their website - no change
  • Shut off hardware acceleration - no change
  • Made sure I have the latest updates from HP - I do
  • Rolled back my C drive to a saved image from before this problem started - no change
