Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

While using the computer offline, playing a game the display screen when blank/black.  The computer was compromised with a virus or other malware a year ago while in possession of a family member.  It was repaired and given to me to use about 6 months ago.  I never used it on the internet for fear of infecting our own computers.  I have attached a HDMI cable to the computer and now can use the computer along with a monitor without any issues.  I cannot determine if the drivers are bad or the screen display has been corrupted or broken in some way.  I do not want to put the computer on the internet in our home so I cannot download any diagnostic tools to check out the screen.  I cannot take the computer anyplace else because I have no display.    Question.  How likely is it that the problem would be fixed by using the recovery folder to make a recovery disk on a USB flash drive and recover the entire operating system to get the screen back?  Or is it more likely the screen problem is a hardware problem and needs to be replaced if I really want to use the computer as another laptop?  Thank you.
