Hi Daniel, This total posting is fantastic.
I managed to be obtain a HP DV9398EA (P/N = GF721EA#ABU) at a knock down price as it seemed to have "terminal" boot up issues. So far I've installed windows 7 and by extensively trawling through this posting I've got it working (to a degree - I'm writing this posting on it!) However the boot up is still a problem. On start up, I get a strange ghostly black and white coarse screen, which clears after 20 seconds and then windows loads. I don't get the normal sort of boot screen, and I get no f2/f10 option. I've got the Nvidia GEOFORCE GO 7600, with the 7.15.11.7948 driver. I would be very grateful if you could help me and I apologise if you've covered it previously, but I didn't find it! Thanks

Hi Daniel,
I recently upgraded my dv9700 laptop from windows vista ultimate 64 to windows 7 professional 64. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M display adapter. Randomly my screen goes blank and I get the following error:
"Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version (whichever i tried) stopped responding and has successfully recovered"
I have tried the most current driver from NVIDIA and the driver you suggested and it still happens. When uninstalling the drivers I used the driver sweeper in safe mode as suggested.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this error?
Thanks,
Mike

Daniël,
great guide. It just flew me through the Win 7 update of my DV9058ea. Everything works great (and yes also the webcam).
The one thing that remains stubborn is the battery (No, not the "replace your battery" issue).
What happens is that when working on battery everything goes well until the battery is down to approx 50%. When at 50% I get a sudden switch off. This really happens without any warning.
This did not happen with the (same) battery when I was on XP.
Can it be that I missed a driver or so?
Thanks for all help anyhow!!!
Kind regards,
Philippe

May I ask where you bought it?

It would be great if you would be able to make video, upload it for example on YouTube and post here link to it.
For now I suspect that this is symptom of hardware problem.
Check your notebook CPU (processor), GPU (graphic card), motherboard and HDD temperature with HWMonitor (free and recommended). Take a screenshot, upload it somwhere and post here link to it.
Take two measurements. When it's loaded and when it's not loaded.
Try to connect it to the external display and check is this problem also appears.
Do you see some strange colors, lines, dots or other deviant behavior from the standard image while you are using Windows 7?

Here you will find all parts which are for your model. You will see there then this battery is listed so it's ok to use it.

It looks that you have problem with overheating or defected graphic card.
Check your notebook CPU (processor), GPU (graphic card), motherboard and HDD temperature with HWMonitor (free and recommended). Take a screenshot, upload it somwhere and post here link to it.
Do two measurements. When it's loaded and when it's not loaded.

Hi,
Download and install HP Battery Check from here.
Click Windows ' Start ' button.
Write in search box ' HP Battery ' and select ' HP Battery Check '.
This software will show you current status of your battery:
- If it will inform you then you need to replace it then you should do it. Second thing which you may do is calibrating the notebook battery. After this step you should see the true percentage of battery charge and real time remaining for the use of battery.
Resource:
Calibrating the Notebook Battery
- If it will inform you then it is ok then post here about it.

Daniel,
Below is an image of HWMonitor after streaming video for a half hour. I can follow with another one when cools down. Are these temperature values too high? I am not 100% positive but I think the error occured again while I was streaming the video. I left the room and when I got back the internet explorer was downsized.
Thanks,
Mike

They are ok. Try to uninstall your current Nvidia driver and install driver from Windows Update.
How to do it?
1.Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking ' All Programs ', and then clicking ' Windows Update '.
2.In the left pane, click ' Check for updates ' , and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
3.Select the ' Optional Updates ' and install from there only driver for your graphic card.
