Hi, previously I got a 33.02.01 [Used Board/Disk Installed] error on this printer but after moving to tech work bench, it is now giving me a:

98.00.00 Error

Turn power off then on.

...message.  I've done that and it continues to display the same message.  For either of these error # codes, what do they mean and what should I troubleshoot?  Suggestions?

corrupt firmware. Need to perform a clean disk procedure from the preboot  menu, it will wipe the firmware and any settings- make sure you have current firmware available on a thumbdrive- you can get more info from the service manual.

Hi, thanks for the feedback.  Unfortunately, I can't get past the error message to do 'Clean Disk item in the Preboot menu.'  Unless this was NOT referring to physically button clicking the printer, I'm not sure how I would do this. Use the instructions below and a usb thumb drive with the firmware bdl file in the root directory to reload the firmware.

Pre-Boot walk-up USB thumb drive: (control panel Pre-Boot menu) NOTE: Only to be used if the printer is not able to boot to READY After uncompressing the file you will see a xxxxxxx.bdl file.

1. Copy the xxxxxxx.bdl file to a portable USB flash memory storage device (thumb drive) in the root directory.

2. Turn the printer ON.

3. Press the Stop button when the Ready, Data and Attention LEDs illuminate solid.

4. Press the Down button to highlight Administrator, and then press OK.

5. Press the Down button to highlight Download, and then press OK.

6. Insert the portable USB storage device with the xxxxxxx.bdl file on it. NOTE: If the message No USB Thumbdrive files found on the control panel display, you may need to use a different USB storage accessory or place the firmware file in the root directory.

7. Press the Down button to highlight USB Thumbdrive, and then press OK.

8. Press the Down button to highlight the xxxxxxx.bdl file, and then press OK. NOTE: If you have more than one .bdl file on your USB Thumb drive, select the file you want loaded and press OK. Please be patient since this may take up to 10 minutes to reboot.

9. When the message Complete appears on the control panel display, press the Back button 3 times.

10. When the message Continue appears on the control panel display, press OK.

11. The printer will continue to boot to the Ready state. Once the printer or MFP is back online, print a Configuration Page and verify that the new firmware has been installed.

Thanks.  Practiced those steps and got the 99.02.24 and 99.02.66 errors, which is leading me to believe that the hard drive in the printer is bad or disconnected.  This person had the same problem: http://www.copytechnet.com/forums/hp/109884-99-02-24-error-hp4540.html

I ran a Diagnostics test as well, and it said a 'short in the dst was detected' with regards to the Disk.  Everything else was fine.  Again, makes me think hard drive is jolted or bad.  I also couldn't reformat the hard drive.  I unscrewed several on the back of this printer but am currently not seeing a way to pull it off and find the hard drive.

It is labeled an 'HP LaserJet Color 500 M551' on the physical printer.
