So I had a TON of trouble Day 1 after setting up this printer and getting one page printed. It suddenly refused to print, giving me the dreaded error message about needing an HP account:
Printer setup incomplete:
Finish printer setup to enable printing. This printer requires the use of an HP account, enabled web services, and internet connection for setup and use.
Here's what I did in Windows 10, after talking with HP support, to fix this. This was a terrible experience, and I likely will not buy another HP printer product again if this is what they let ship. Product managers should be watching these threads... The perception I'm reading online is it's extortion by HP. I don't think that's what they intended to do - at least I hope not. I would love to speak with a PM about this experience. It was less than subpar, at best.
This message is related to the post here, where the answer was simply "give HP 99 cents/month to make this go away." Seriously?
In Windows 10:
0. In the HP app, go to Printer Information, and make note of the IP address.
1. Go to IP address in your address bar, such as https://192.168.0.10
2. If prompted for security issues, go to Advanced and continue anyway.
3. Go to Settings
4. Go to Restore Defaults, left column
5. Choose HP Secure Erase
6. Go through the process to Secure Erase, then click OK when it's done.
7. After a minute or two, the printer will turn off. Wait for that 🙂
8. Go to Start menu, search for HP Smart, then select Uninstall.
9. Go to web browser, and go to https://www.hpsmart.com
10. Sign in with your HP account.
11. After signing in, go to: https://www.hpsmart.com/us/en/newprinter
12. Click My Printers.
13. See your 9010 series printer that was added.
14. Click Remove Printer and confirm to remove.
15. Sign out by clicking the initials at the top right and selecting Sign Out.
16. Press Start-R (Windows Key + R)
17. Type "control printers" without the quotes
18. Find your printer and remove it by right-clicking and selecting Remove.
19. Turn your printer back on.
20. Go through setup. Press OK when you see the stupid HP account error.
21. Go through the alignment process again. Ignore being mad at HP that they're forcing you to waste ink.
22. When prompted to go to 123hp.com, press the ? icon, then press Cancel, then Cancel again.
23. Press OK at the message about updates.
24. The blue light should be flashing on the printer.
25. Reinstall HP Smart app by opening the Windows store, searching for HP Smart, and installing it.
26. After the legal stuff, go to Setup New Printer.
27. It should see your printer. Make sure that, if your printer is on Wi-Fi, your computer is, too. If your computer is connected to Ethernet, it will not see the Wi-Fi device. VERY ANNOYING.
28. Choose your printer to set it up.
29. Let it go through the process of finding and configuring your printer. It should auto detect the Wi-Fi, ask you to share the password - choose No - and set up the printer, entering your Wi-Fi password manually. I only had timeouts when letting it "automatically share" the password, hence the reason I'm suggesting you enter it manually.
FYI: The HP Smart app is dumb, and it might turn off your Bluetooth. Make sure you turn that back on if you notice loss of keyboard and/or mouse access.
30. Hit Continue when asked about Connected Printing Services.
31. Activate HP+, but you'll be skipping the free ink offer.
32. You'll be told to enjoy your extra year of warranty.
33. When asked to enroll in Instant Ink, select Skip Free Ink. Confirm with Yes, Skip Offer.
34. Skip sending the link to print from other devices.
35. Skip printing page.
36. Go to Start, type Printers, and select Printers & Scanners. You should see your printer.
You should be good to go.
