HP OfficeJet 6958
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently received the  "The document feeder was not able to pick up the original. Make sure the document feeder cover is closed completely...and try again." issue which others have reported for the HP OfficeJet 6958 with many cases not resolved.

After trying recommended solutions with no resolution, I was able to diagnose the problem as a damaged signal cable and fix the problem by splicing the cable that runs from the ADF opto-sensor to the printer motherboard.  After so many flexes two of the conductors broke within this cable.  After checking continuity, I replaced a segment of the wire (or you could replace the whole ADF part), and the unit started working again.  The wire I guess just fatigue failed from opening the scanner unit.  The problem is without this optical sensor the ADF could not detect the end of the page and kept looking for it, causing the error.  This does take a while and some patience to perform this repair.
