HP Deskjet 2540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everyone,

I started recently having a problem with my HP Deskjet 2540 printer.

This printer has worked for years, with different PCs, connected via USB cable and with no manual installation (no CD, no drivers and software downloaded from HP's website, just plug-in and automatic Windows 10 installation).

A few days ago I installed the update to Windows 11 and the printer stopped printing (the document was in print queue and then an error occured). I downgraded to Windows 10 and still wasn't working.

I tried pretty much everything:

 - reset the printer

 - uninstall and reinstall the printer and the drivers (by uninstalling the printer from both device manager and the device menu on the settings and then plugging-in and waiting for the automatic setup)

 - restart the PC

 - use HP's tool for installing the printer (the one that install the drivers and makes you install HP Smart app and a couple of tools for maintenance)

This last procedure was partially successful, in the sense that all the drivers and tools have been installed, the printer was correctly recognized and yet it can't print (the documents aren't even in the print queue).

It is marked as "ready" in Word, "inactive" in the Device menu of Windows' settings and "unknown status" in HP Smart.

When I try to print a pdf from Adobe, it simply doesn't do anything. When I try to print from Word, a pop-up appears, stating that the system could send the document to print due to a "printer configuration problem". If I try to print a pdf using HP Smart, it is specified that this printer configuration problem is the error 0x80070077.

However the printer works for photocopies, I can print the test pages from the dedicated tool and I can see ink levels. I could also update printer's firmware and the printer was responsive.

Moreover, I can scan documents using Windows' built-in scanning tool (the scanning has never stopped working, also without manual installation and with Windows 11).

How could I solve?
