HP Recommended
OfficeJet 4500
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This is a really lazy and lame answer that probably caused the owner to throw away a perfectly good piece of hardware: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/Document-Manager/td-p/5878463

HP Document Manager 2.0 is an old 2009-era scanner software for OfficeJet 4500 print/scan/fax/copy devices. It was replaced several times, but NONE of the replacements are available at this time. Google returns HP pages to download the newer apps from, but the HP pages are "404" garbage. Even though you paid for the scanner, and it does what you need it to do, HP does NOT want you to use the OfficeJet 4500 scanner any more.  They intentionally excluded the HP Document Manager software (but not the scanner TWAIN driver!!) from the Windows 8/10 driver, even though the Document Manager software DOES work on Windows 10, even 21H1 build with August 2021 patches!

If you are reading this, you are probably a victim of the lie. Here is the truth:

HP Document Manager 2.0 is part of the 2009 (v13) install package for the OfficeJet 4500.
HP Document Manager is compatible with Windows 10.
HP claims that Document Manager is not compatible with Windows 10.
HP Document Manager was "discontinued" but the replacement(s) did not perform the same function.
HP provided a Windows 8/10 compatible print driver, but chose to omit the Document Manager app.
The Win10 driver from HP still contains a compatible scanner/TWAIN driver, just no app to interface with the driver.
The Win7 driver contains a compatible Document Manager app.

Savvy computer users (with admin rights, required) can combine the two versions to have a fully functional OfficeJet 4500 on Windows 10. If you are not comfortable both performing this procedure AND implementing your own undo/fix/rollback process, please stop now and phone a friend who is.

Download ahead of time:

The 2009 "v13" installer, which contains the HP Document Manager 2.0 installation package, but lacks a Windows 10 compatible scanner/TWAIN driver. During install, it will fail to detect the "scanner portion" of the device, complaining about firewall ports or device not responding on those ports.

The 2015 "v14" installer, which not only omits the installer on new computers, but actually UNINSTALLS existing copies of Document Manager from existing computers. However, it DOES have a Win10 compatible scanner driver.

A short overview of the procedure (all commands/exe files must be "Run as Administrator" or otherwise elevated to satisfy UAC:

0 - Uninstall any existing HP OfficeJet 4500 software/drivers, using the original installer program if possible. REBOOT.

1 - Run the v13 installer, and install the full suite, and when it gets to the scanner error, "ignore" and "continue" to finish installation. It will force a REBOOT when you exit the installer at the end.

2 - Run the v13 installer again, and UNINSTALL everything except HP Document Manager. REBOOT.

3 - Back up and rename the registry key that stores the Document Manager "Add/Remove Programs" inventory/metadata:

reg.exe export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HP Document Manager" "c:\windows\temp\Backup-DesktopManager.reg" /y

reg.exe copy "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HP Document Manager" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HP Document Manager for Win10" /f /s

reg.exe add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HP Document Manager for Win10" /v "DisplayName" /t REG_SZ /d "HP Document Manager 2.0 for Win10" /f

reg.exe delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HP Document Manager" /f

4 - Run the v14 installer. Because you renamed the registry ket it looks for, it will NOT be able to detect that HP Document Manager is installed. Now, the v14 installer is incapable of removing your perfectly functional Document Manager app! Even though HP desperately wants to break your scanner and sell you a new one, you just prevented the scam. Good for you, but shame on HP for putting you through this! REBOOT.

5 - Run the v14 installer again, and remove all the useless HP "bloatware" (everything except the actual OfficeJet 4500 driver). REBOOT.

Run HP Document Manager 2.0 and try to scan something. You MIGHT get an error that the scanner is not ready, but if you try again it should work. (The error at this point has always been a problem on my computer even in 2012 when I was running Win7.)

Voila! You have Windows 10, you have a working OJ4500 printer, you have a working OJ4500 scanner/TWAIN driver, *AND* you have a working Document Manager app. HP Sales/Marketing is crying right now, and calling their legal department to see if they can censor this post on some baseless grounds. They will whine and say "This is not supported!" but you can tell them "I don't need your so-called 'support' on this any more, HP, you blew your chance to help your customers with this problem by blowing smoke up their noses. My printer and scanner work now, and if I ever do need a new scanner it won't be an HP product."

This is a better answer than the typical HP, Microsoft, Dell, Apple etc. arrogant answer (usually spoken/read in a nasal tone) of "We don't allow that. You need to buy a new one."
