G4050 scanner
Microsoft Windows XP

I have been using the same software that came with HP G4050 scanner [HP Scanjet G4000 series - HP Scanning Software 8.3] since 2009. It has run great.  I have a newer computer and attached the G4050 scanner to it, downloaded a Windows 10 64 bit download, installed it and it ran GREAT!.  Larger screen, better cropping, rotating, etc.  However, it has one terrible problem; the scanner seems to stop midway.  When I press cancel, the scanner makes a very loud bang [only doing negatives/slides] when it travels back to HOME.  It does not do it all the time.

Scanning a document or photograph is no problem.  This uses only the bottom half of the scanner.

When scanning slides/negatives the G4050 uses both bottom and top scanners; Top has a light that travels on a bed to illuminate the slide/negative so it can be scanned by the lower scanner bed.

I have tried turning the scanner off after use which seems to help.

I have reduced the number of slide/negatives scanned at one time which seems to help.

I have taken the lid apart to inspect for damage and found none.  There is a proximity sensor that is made up of two parts; a vertical pin attached to the scanner bed that will travel and trip the sensor that is fixed to  circuit board. [fixed location for home]  I saw no damage from a strike.

The newer version scans and saves each frame in memory unlike the version 8.1 that saves each frame to an individual file in a temp folder.  I think the size of the file after 30 frames may be the problem (30 Frames x 4 Mb).  But that seems too small to be the problem.  The new version is easier to use do to the screen editing area fills the screen.

The 8.1 version has a much smaller screen size, makes it difficult to crop tiny photos.  In addition, the scanner is used to zoom in on each frame to scan which takes time.

I downloaded and installed the following on my XP computer

HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner Full Feature Software and Driver

14.5.1 109.5 MB Sep 9, 2015

After installation my four buttons no longer worked on the G4050 scanner.

I have used the four .bat files that came with the version 8.1 disc to remove the HP G4050 software several times.  I have tried alternative downloads and nothing works.

What makes this really bad, is just using the original software that came with the G4050 scanner on the very same computer with the same operating system, I cannot get the G4050 to respond and if I do get a button to work, I no longer have any control or adjustment to color, light/dark, size, rotation, or ability to crop and see the actual frames that are to be scanned.

If I could go back to what I had before I attempted to install the newer G4050 scanner software for my XP 32 bit processor, it would be great.

Any help one can give would be greatly appreciated!!Slide1.JPGSlide2.JPGSlide3.JPG
