Laserjet 4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings!

This posting is taking place on October 13th, 2019 - and by this time HP is not providing a Laserjet 4 printer driver for Win-10 via Windows Update. (i.e. find driver via Windows Update)

I found a solution.

Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for "HP Laserjet 4" (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=hp%20laserjet%204)

and you will see a whole host of them.

  • The first batch, (11.4 MB), are the 32 bit drivers (x86).  I don't know if there even IS a 32 bit version of Windows 10.

  • The second batch, (13.9 MB), are the IA64 (Itanium) drivers.  You probably don't want these.

  • The third batch, (11.6 MB), are the AMD64 drivers.  These are likely the ones you want.

Pick the driver you want to download - I pick the "4 Plus" driver because it works better with the envelope feeder - download it, and then using something like 7-ZIP or WinRar, unpack the cab file to its own folder.

Note:  When I did this, I received an error that there was "data past the end of the payload".  This did not affect the driver installation - you can ignore it.

Now, go install the printer whatever way you need based on the kind of interface you need. (I use a JetDirect network-to-parallel printer interface, so I select "Local or networked printer" and then "TCP/IP Port")

When you get to the driver part, select "Have Disk" and then browse to the folder you unpacked the cab file into and select the .inf file.

Let it install, print a test page, and you're golden!

Hope this helps.
