I have tried installing the scanner apps on two different computers and spend half a day reading forums and trying every imaginable troubleshooting step, and I still can't launch the HP scanner apps, none of them.

HP Scan says "The HP imaging device was not found". It then takes me to a window where I can re-add the device. I select wired network (Ethernet). A Windows Security Alert pops up asking me to allow HPNetworkCommunicatorCom, and I leave the default "Private" networks option ticked, then click Allow access. Next. "Unable to find the device" (despite it finding the device when the app is installed). I type in the IP address, and it finds it. "The software is installed and your device is connected". Finish. Back to square 1 (Device Settings window, with no devices shown, delete & open greyed-out, only options cancel or add device again!). Relaunching HP Scan app, same story.

HP Scan Assistant app just launches the HP Scan app, same deal as above.

HP TWAIN Administration app shows two options, one USB, the other M480 TWAIN 2.4(32-32). Click Select, then HP TWAIN: "The HP imaging device was not found". Then another popup: "Open Data Source Failed".

Launch HP Scan - Scanner Tools Utility: "The HP imaging device was not found".

Launch HP Smart app: Click Scan: "Scanning is currently unavailable".

Nevertheless, I am able to scan from the printer and send files to shared network folders on both computers.

I have followed the advice here: HP Futuresmart MFPs TWAIN Scanning | HP - YouTube - including enabling WebScan & Secure WebScan in Networking tab, Mgnt. Protocols, Other; and enabling Remote Scan Autocapture - Security, General, WebScan Auto Capture Jobs.
