HP PageWide 377dw Printer

I understand I cannot use high capacity x cartridges in my relatively new HP PageWide 377dw.  Just to be ready when I needed them, I bought standard HP 972a replacement cartridges in black and all three colors soon after buying the printer.  I noticed, however, when I replaced the original black ink cartridge that came with the printer that the empty one was larger, i.e., wider, than the replacement cartridge.  That original black cartridge was labeled HP 972 -- no "a" and no "x."  The original color cartridges, also labeled HP 972 -- no "a" -- were definitely the standard size.  My question is, given the physical size of the black cartridge that originally came with the machine, can I use the high capacity HP 972x black cartridges?  I'd love to be able to use the high capacity version of the black cartridge, but it would be a pricey mistake to purchase one and not be able to use it.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has tried to use the HP 972x in the HP PageWide 377dw -- with or without success.  Many thanks.
