HP Recommended

I have an older HP stand alone photo printer I would like to bring back to life and use. I put new ink cartridges in it. They are non-HP because I did not want to spend $75 if the printer would not work. I s it possible to clean the print head? I haven't used the printer for a year. I also get a memory card error. The cards work fine in my PC. Should I just chuck this printer?
