Simply put Laser Printers are well worth the investment, will last a very long time, the ink does not dry out and will most likely last you longer then you need the printer.

Working in IT I hear people complain all the time about the cost of Ink Cartridges and every time they need to print they need to get new cartridges because the old ones dried out or expired or some stupid reason. Toner for laser printers will never dry out and will still work years later, at most you need to take it out and shake it a little.

A basic (mono) laser printer can cost as little as $100 and the toner as little as $30 for two toners which provide ~3000 pages or 1 cent a page. All this is based off of an HP P1005 I purchased almost 10 years ago and still use today.

A colour all in one, can cost $200 (based on a Brother MFC9130CW on sale) and replacement ink is $43 for 2 black carts at 2,500 pages a cart or .86 cents a page. All 4 carts is $70 for 9100 pages or .77 cents per page. In comparison a $60 inkjet all in one printer (Canon MX492 on sale) will cost $48 for black and colour and will yield 600 pages total or 8 cents a page. in order to yield the same amount of pages as 1 set of toner it will cost $728 of printer ink or roughly 10 times as much. This pricing does not include the print cartridges  drying out on you or the savings on refilling cartridges.

All prices are in Canadian dollars based off printer prices on Bestbuy.ca and toner is based off of Ebay.ca with free shipping.

Edit: i realized there are cheaper cartridges out there for inkjet printers but i'm basing this off of people going into buy a printer and getting the one on sale/cheapest. This is because this is what i see people doing all the time from working at a Best Buy type store to people telling me what they got.
