I have managed to install HPLIP 3.20.5 on USB, and the printing works well. However, when I attempt to scan, I get the following message: "Failed to open device 'hpaio:/usb/ENVY_Pro_6400_series?serial=**********': Error during device I/O. At the same time,I get the following message from the HP Device Manager-Plug-in Installer: Driver Plug-in Required "HP Device proprietary plug-in is missing. Click "Next" to continue plug-in installation. In case of plugin download failure, run the 'hp-plugin' command from the terminal manually"
I clicked "Next" and got the following message: " Failed to install Plug-in. Either you have chosen to skip the Plug-in installation or entered incorrect Password". There was never an option to enter a password.
So I went to the terminal and entered 'hp-plugin'; that didn't work. I got the dreaded "errror: python gobject/dbus may not be installed. Error: plugin install failed."
I found a very useful answer to a similar question here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/HPLIP-3-19-12-Linux-Mint-19-3-Plugin-installation-fa...
but it doesn't address 3.20.5. And I'm a bit confused about the actual process. Do I run all of the commands before RESTART and then download hplip 3.20.5, follow that with the command sh hplip-3.20.5.run, then download hplip-3.20.5-plugin.run, followed by the command sh hplip-3.20.5-plugin.run?
It would seem that the commands before RESTART sort of clean my system and the commands after RESTART install what's needed. Is that correct?
So I tried to run the commands in the cited question, and got the following messages:
1) python uninstall.py "$ sudo python uninstall.py
python: can't open file 'uninstall.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory"
2)$ sudo apt purge hplip*

Can someone help?
