HP Deskjet 5610 All In One
Microsoft Windows XP

Yes, yes, I am still using XP and it is still a great OS, so enough of the gasps and laughing as this same scenario could happen in more modern OS's.  In my constant quest to find a decent antivirus program, I recently came across ClamWin, an open source app. Right off the bat I found it was providing false targets of which it quarantined.  The scan results even said they were probably false.  I had no problem with any of the results and actions until my shortcut to HP Solution Center said it was infected and the name was changed.  I promptly removed the software and reinstalled only to find out ClamWin did the same thing and changed the name of the shortcut to hpqdirec.exe.infected and removed the ICON from Program Files.

Here is my fix: I removed ClamWin, because I couldn't figure out how to make an exception for my executable file it kept getting rid of.  I searched my HP Officejet 5600 series installation CD for hpqdirec.exe and my search found a file F2879_hpqdirec.exe.E793... etc, etc.  If anyone has had this same problem you will see the entire file name after your search has found it.  I copied the file, pasted it in: Program Files> HP> Digital Imaging> Bin,  and  renamed it to hpqdirec.exe.   You can then create a shortcut on your desktop.  Problem Solved!  For anyone wondering, I downloaded a different anti-virus program.
