LaserJet 1200
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everyone!

Up until recently I was successfully using an old HP LaserJet 1200 printer (connected via USB) with a PCL 5 driver.

Recent Windows 10 updates did break some things so I had to reinstall it, but I couldn't get an HP Universal Driver Installer to install PCL 5 driver for me anymore, the only drivers that it does install are PCL 6 and PS.

I'm setting up the printer manually, it doesn't recognize the driver if I try to point at it from Device Manager. I'm adding a new printer, manually selecting one of the drivers from the known printers list.

Now, when I try to use a PS driver, as most people are suggesting, the printer gives Out of Memory error or starts blinking an error light when I try to print any document (Word or PDF). I've moved to PCL 6 driver, it mostly works OK, but gives an PCL XL error (Subsystem: Image, Error: IllegalAtributeValue) on some documents (currently encountered this only once, and this document for some reason doesn't even print to PDF correctly, but the same document on other PCs works fine).

My question is - what is the most correct way to set up this printer on Windows 10? Do I need to get PCL 5 driver somehow or configure some settings to make it work with a PS driver?

The one thing that I did configure outside of a driver setup - I had to add a "713073804" registry key to "disable latest update error", otherwise I couldn't connect to the printer from the network, regardless of the driver.
