HP Recommended
Laserjet 1536dnf
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

This started as an attempt to fix the "hpmsn101.dll" error using the suggestion by someone that removing and reinstalling the printer drivers would solve the problem.  When I tried that idea the HP install program would hang up on the step where you connect the USB cable to the printer.  I tried the usual infinite number of monkeys solution trying anything I could think of over and over again but to no avail.  I then noticed that there was new firmware available for the 1536 printer, mine had 20111215 and the new one was 20140630.  It took quite a while to get an interim driver only installed so that the update program would talk to the printer and update.  After I got the new firmware installed then the HP install program would run and complete the installation.

If you want to do what I did the procedure is to update the printer firmware first then uninstall the drivers and re-install them.  The update program will not work with the old firmware.  The install program was obviously tested on the new firmware.  It would be nice if HP updated the install program to check for the needed firmware version but don't hold your breath.  So far I am not getting the "hpmsn101.dll" error any more.

Hope this helps someone.
