Officejet Pro X576dw

My printer showed up with the error "HP Protected Cartridge installed. Replace Cartridge" a week or so ago on the "Y" cartridge. This is NOT a newly installed cartridge and my printer does NOT have cartridge protection turned on. The printer had work perfectly with this cartridge for months, then this error showed up. 

I don't know if this is a printer problem or a cartridge issue. I don't want to buy a new (ridiculously overpriced) cartridge if the printer is the issue. Nor do I want this to continue randomly occurring. 

Firmware Version is - LZP1CN2022AR

Any thoughts?
