HP OfficeJet Pro 9020
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I migrated from a Laserjet Pro MFP M477 to OfficeJet Pro 9020.  On my Laserjet I used to Scan Documents right on a network folder on my NAS, a Synology DiskStation. This is an extremely convenient feature, since the folder „Scan“ on my Diskstation is synchronized with a folder „Scan“ my MacBook

After a long try and error I finally managed to setup the same with my new OfficeJet Pro 9020. I would like to share with you know, how:

I am using the HP Smart App for configuring the printer.

When Setting up the network folder for scanning (Scan - Scan to network folder), the field „Network Path“ of the input screen accepts this paths to the scan folder on my DiskStation:

\\DiskStation\homes\[user name]\Drive\[folder name]

(instead of \\Diskstation\\ the field does also allow for the DiskStation’s IP4 address. Also, the field does not allow for smb:\\)

Note:  The path the Mac shows when selecting a file in the DiskStation’s scan folder does not seem to work (even when omitting the „afp:“ - and change all the „\“  - which worked on my Laserjet Pro MFP M477). The HP Smart App does not display an input error message, but „Network error. Check the network connection of the printer and try again.“

On the next page, you need to input a valid DiskStation’s username and password.  My individual user did not work („Check user name/password and try again“), most probably because it does have not the right read and write on all \homes\ folders (only on my own home folder). When I use the Admin’s user name and password, it works.

Therefore, I defined a new user in the DiskStation specifically for the printer and it worked. The Printer user has the right to read and write on the Homes folders (that is the difference to my individual user!), no quota, use DSM, File Station and Synology Drive.

I omitted defining a Security PIN, so I do not know, whether this feature works.

Select the scan and file settings as you like, click „Save and Test“ and … off you go!

My configuration:

MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.15.7 (Wifi), Mac can access the DiskStation via Finder (smb://DiskStation)

Synology DS416play with DSM 6.2.4-25556 (LAN cable)m SMB (ver 1-3) active

HP OfficeJet Pro 9020, newest Firmware, Bonjour aktive, SMB (v2 and v3) active
