HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 (all-in-one)

I have an OfficeJet Pro 6978 that I'm tying to set up to scan over RDP.  Little background on the configuration.  This is for someone who will be working from home and RDP'ing into a desktop.  So a laptop (which is being used strictly for RDP) and the printer will be in a remote location away from the desktop.  I was able to configure the print function from the desktop to the printer (remotely)... but the issue I'm having is with the scanning.  On the screen of the printer, we have the option to scan to computer (which would be the local laptop- we don't want) or to the USB (which would be pointless, as the laptop is being used as a thin client).  The only way the printer is recognized on the desktop is when it's physically plugged into it.... once it's disconnected from the desktop, the printer completely forgets that computer.  I tried running the scanning software on the desktop, but it keeps failing and is looking for direct connection to the printer.  The settings are configured enough that allows for redirected printing... but I'm looking for the scanning feature to do the same thing, but send it to the desktop as opposed from the desktop.
