My office jet 4650 showed improper shutdown and then service station stalled. After tinkering, resetting the printer a bunch of times, going through the menus, and cleaning... I found a solution that cleared the problem.

1. Power up the printer. 

2. Shift the cartridge carriage to the left. 

3. There was a couple squares to the far right on a rail... I shifted the entire assembly attached to these squares towards the front of the printer.

4. Hit OK on the screen.

5. Winning!
