HP ENVY 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I would like to share the solution that worked for me after browsing dozens of topics on this HP forum.

Situation:
- Printer works perfectly with HP drivers (downloaded from HP website) on multiple Windows 7 computers. Printer works perfectly when printing from mobile devices (Android phones). Printer can make color copies using its touchscreen.
- However, printer does not print in color with HP drivers (downloaded from HP website) from a Windows 10 computer with a recent update; I have Windows 10 64-bit Build 19041 (version 2004 / May 2020 update).
- A pop-up with error 0xe06d7363 shows up when trying to modify printer preferences.
- Printer is connected by Wi-Fi to the home wireless router.

Solution:

1) Follow the usual steps provided by HP employees to remove all traces of HP printing software and drivers, for reference:
- On the Windows 10 computer, open the Start menu, type "programs", open "Apps & Features", in the search bar type "HP" then uninstall all software related to printing.
- open Start menu, type "control", open the Control Panel, click on "View devices and printers"; if your printer is listed here, right-click on it then remove it. (It is completely NORMAL if the printer doesn't appear here or in the following steps, in this case just ignore the step and move on)
- using the keyboard, press simultaneously the Windows key and the R key. In the Run window that appears, type "printui.exe /s" then click OK. In the "Drivers" tab, if your HP printer appears, click on it then click Remove at the bottom. Confirm on the following dialog boxes that appear. If it says it can't remove because it's currently in use, reboot the computer and try again. Make sure that there is no document waiting to be printed on the Windows 10 computer (at the bottom of the screen, on the Windows taskbar next to the current time, check that there's no printer icon / printing queue)
- Reboot computer.

2) Open Control Panel again, "View devices and printers", then "Add Printer"; if the Windows 10 computer is connected by Wi-Fi to the same router as the HP printer, it should detect it automatically after a few seconds, but DO NOT click on it, click "The printer that I want isn't listed", then "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname". In Device type put "Autodetect", then below type the IP address of your printer. The IP address can be easily found using the touchscreen of the printer or by opening your router settings; it's usually something like 192.168.X.X where X are 1 or more numbers. Confirm on the next windows that appear.

I am very disappointed that I had to go through these steps and that the HP drivers downloaded from the official website do not work.

Here it says the HP ENVY 5540 drivers last update was on April 24th 2017. Why isn't HP updating the drivers?
