Hi There,

Thought I would post this here becuse it's a pain to figure out and it may help someone else.

Something about  the HP Printer Software Update 5.0 and 5.1 doesn't agree with my particular computer. This issue has persisted across OS upgrades and occured for both the 5.0 and 5.1 updates. Your experience may be different - it this happened to everyone, HP would fix it i am sure.

After accepting the update (initially in good faith, then to test to see if my problem really was caused by the HP Software, and then after ignoring it for some time, on the 5.1 update under a newer OS to see if HP or Apple had fixed the issue) , the OS fails to boot and remains permanently stuck with the white apple logo on a black background and the proress bar at 100%.

Here's how I fixed it, and here's how I got rid of the update request:

The Fix (if this sounds scary, don't do it - find someone who is comfortable with  this process to help you):

1) Hold the power button until your machine shuts off

2)Hold the 'command' and 'R' keys simultaneously, then start your machine. Wait for the chimes before you let go.

3) you will boot into the recovery partition.

4)Open the 'terminal' application (hint: it's in a menu)

5) cd /Volumes/<your Volume Name Here>/Library/Extensions

5a) to figure out your volume name, type 'cd /Volumes', then type 'ls' to see the list of available volumes. The one you want to use is the one you normally boot into.

6) type 'ls - l' when you are in the Extensions directory of your boot Volume, and confirm that you see the directory hp_io_enabler.kext

7) type 'rm -rf hp_io_enabler.kext'  this will recursively delet the directory and all contents. the f means 'force'.

😎 if you like, type 'ls -l' to confirm that the 'lil guy is gone.

9) quit the Terminal

10) reboot your machine to normal operation and get on with your life.

I did find abother place where this same issue was also discussed:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/258719/macbook-pro-stuck-booting-after-sierra-10-12-1-upda...

Finally, to avoid tempting myself to trust HP again, I can hide the update. To hide specific updates in Sierra, right-click (Command click) on the specific update, and select the convenient 'Hide Update' that appears. How easy is that?

@HP, I'm not on support, but tell me, what does that file do? Am I missing a magical experience in printing without thie extension? I like your printers, I have three of them. :generic:
