OMG!!! You guys are geniuses.  I've been screwing with this problem for over a month now and per your suggestion, I tried tricking my PC into believing that I'm using a Laserjet 3055 PLCS vice my tried and tested  Laserjet 1012 and it's now printing.  Thanks so very much.

This network system does work!

New believer and you can teach and old dog new tricks (smile),

Thanks so much sk2play!  Super helpful, even 3 years later

Worked great for me. Be sure to select the dot4 (IEEE 1284.4) as the printer port. This printer is a real work-horse for b&w copies. So glad to have it back in the queue.

Your advice worked!!  Hurray!!  I've been trying for over a week to get my HP 1012 to print.  Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

This solution worked great and the printer works every time.  Except now whenever I turn the computer on, I get a popup message that the driver for the DOT4_001 (Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support) did not install properly/completely.  Is there any way to disable this driver check without disabling the printer itself?  Thanks!

sk2play (Post #3),

Looks like your post was your very 1st one ... and it was a dandy!

Here it is - 2½ years later - and HP still says the LJ1012 is unsupported on Win7.  As you note, your method works like a charm.

I did go to "Printer Properties" and update the printer name to something more correct.  However, the "real" 1012 still shows up as "Unspecified."

The solution given is working well, I just repeat it for the new one:

- in manually install a printer:

choose the HP 3055.

port 4DOT

with the driver already there,

I renamed the printer "choose the name you want" for my it was laserjet fantome

then Connect the printer with USB cable and print the test page. it will works!

thank you again for it (don t remember who it was)

Hey people.. Thank you all for the great thread!

It is unfortunate that HP is that lazy or indifferent to the need of its users.. Thanks to sk2 and someguy.. now my 1012 is working fine on Windows 7!!

I just found your thread. Worked like a charm.   My old HP works like a charm, no sense in upgrading this fine little printer.
