I recently tried to install an update to Windows 10 (sorry, don't know exactly what version) and followed instructions to plug in an external hard drive. However, this took so long (at least two hours before I went to bed, leaving it still at it) that I think the battery must have run out in the middle.
When I switched it back on, all I could get was the HP logo, a revolving dotted circle and a message "Undoing changes to your computer". I left the machine plugged in and switched on for about 10 hours, with no change to this.
Using another machine, I found and followed Microsoft's advice to power off and on again a few times, but this made no difference. A couple of friends advised a 'hard reset', so I found and followed HP's own advice on how to do that, removing the external hard drive and the mouse (the battery isn't accessible) and holding down the power switch. But all that got me was a request to plug the drive back in, and when I did it, exactly the same screen.
Now what?
