The top row of keys on the wireless keyboard that came packaged with this desktop computer default to secondary functions, e.g. mute, volume up, volume down, etc. To use them as function keys, you must press the "FN" key. For example, pressing the 2nd key turns the volume down. If I want F2, I have to press FN and then press the second key. Unlike every other keyboard I have ever seen, there appears to be no way to lock these keys so that they default to the function keys instead of defaulting to the secondary functions.
Here's what I have tried so far that has not worked:
- Press FN and Caps lock
- Press FN and Caps lock and hold it for 8 seconds
- Press FN and Escape
- Press FN and the little lock icon on the right (which just locks the computer)
- Enter BIOS to look for a way to disable Action Keys. (The BIOS for this computer does not have this option)
- Install and implement keyboard mapping software (e.g., Keytweaker)
- Spend over an hour chatting with the HP support center
Is there any solution to this issue, or am I destined to have to buy a new keyboard? This is the craziest design I have ever seen.
