Hi, I've just solved this issue. It isn't in the display screen, it's actually on the surface of the screen (when you close the laptop, this part of the screen rests against the mouse button in between the G, H and B keys. This button has a raised circle of dots on it, so any dirt on the button gets printed onto the screen when the laptop is closed!)
So you can actually just scratch it off with your finger! It's been bugging me for months, and I finally got around to contacting HP support, and we worked out what it was. Easy solution!
