Product: HP x360 14" Touchscreen 2-in-1 Chromebook

Hi.  Has anyone been successful in getting a USB ChromeOS restore after seeing the "Error recovering your device" screen, screenshot below?  I have already spent a few hours trying to troubleshoot and recover but have had no success.  I can take out the USB drive and reboot but this only gets me back to a boot screen that says to insert a recovery media USB or SD.  Ctrl-D, Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R, both do nothing.  I bought this touchscreen Chromebook about 18 months ago and it was not low end and I'd be willing to spend ~$100 taking it to a shop but I don't want to waste money on a diagnostic that is just going to say it is bricked if no one has had success after being unable to do a USB restore.  Thank you for any comments on your experiences!
