This flatbed scanner with USB connection ist not recognized by either HP Easy Scan or the system settings. However, system report of my macbook shows that scanner is connected to the USB hub and has been correctly identified. Any ideas?

Macbook can't be upgraded.

Hello @Fidus, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

It is helpful that your Mac’s System Report detects the HP ScanJet Pro 2500 f1 over USB. That indicates the Mac is seeing the scanner at the hardware/USB level, so the problem is more likely related to the scanning driver or application rather than the USB connection itself.

Since the Mac cannot be upgraded beyond macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra), the best approach is to use the scanner through the macOS built-in ICA (Image Capture Architecture) driver, rather than relying entirely on HP Easy Scan.

Check the macOS scanning driver

The HP ScanJet Pro 2500 f1 supports scanning through the Apple ICA driver on supported versions of OS X/macOS. On a Mac, you do not need a separate HP TWAIN driver for this scanner.

Try scanning directly through Image Capture:

  1. Connect the ScanJet Pro 2500 f1 directly to the Mac using USB and turn on the scanner.

  2. Open Applications > Image Capture.

  3. Look under Devices in the left-hand pane for the HP ScanJet Pro 2500 f1.

  4. Select the scanner.

  5. Click Show Details if you need additional scan settings.

  6. Select the desired scan options, file format, and destination under Scan To.

  7. Click Scan.

If the scanner appears in System Report but not in Image Capture

This distinction is important: System Report detecting the scanner confirms USB detection, but it does not necessarily mean the ICA scanning interface is loading correctly.

Try these steps:

  1. Disconnect the scanner's USB cable.

  2. Shut down the Mac.

  3. Turn off the scanner.

  4. Start the Mac and allow macOS to finish loading.

  5. Turn on the scanner.

  6. Connect the scanner directly to the Mac again, avoiding USB hubs or adapters where possible.

  7. Open Image Capture and check the Devices list again.

If Image Capture recognizes the scanner, you can use it as the primary scanning application even if HP Easy Scan does not detect the device.

About HP Easy Scan

Because you are using an older, fixed macOS version, compatibility with newer HP software versions can be limited. The fact that the scanner is visible in System Report but unavailable in HP Easy Scan does not necessarily indicate a hardware failure.

For this Mac, Image Capture is the preferred alternative to test basic scanner functionality because it uses the macOS scanning framework.

If the ScanJet Pro 2500 f1 appears in Image Capture, the scanner hardware and USB connection are functioning, and you can continue scanning without relying on HP Easy Scan.

If the scanner is visible only under System Report > USB but does not appear in Image Capture, the remaining issue is likely with the ICA scanning interface or the software environment on macOS 10.13.6. Since the Mac cannot be upgraded, the available software options may be limited.

Have a great day!
